A Peek into Life as a Vegas High Roller
9 May 2012 | By: Seth Shafer Most of us wonder from time to time what it’s really like to be a high roller in Vegas, as far as trading in playing $5/hand blackjack at Bally’s for wagering tens of thousands of dollars on a single hand of baccarat in the high-roller salon at Aria. We can’t help with the gambling part but we can give you a glimpse into some of the nicest high-roller suites that Las Vegas has to offer. High roller suites are often used as free comps as a way to entice gamblers to come stay for a visit but many can also be reserved by the general public, assuming you’ve got the cash or a credit card handy with a high enough limit. Aria: Featured in the photo here, the Sky Villas include 2 and 3 bedroom versions with amazing views of Sin City as well as a massive, elegant staircase linknig the upstairs and downstairs areas. You’ll have your own personal concierge and private transportation to and from the airport, all for the low price of $3,500-$7,500 per night. The Venetian: It’s good to be the boss and the Chairman Suites at the Venetian treat you like the head of the board. The $25,000/night price tag gets you 10,000 square feet of room to relax in, a private salon and sauna, and even a butler and karaoke room. Yes, that’s right: your own karaoke room. The Palms: The Palms has carved out a niche for itself by catering to a younger, hipper crowd, with its 10,000 square foot Hardwood Suite taking that to an extreme. No, the $25,000/night suite isn’t decked out in rare Brazilian cherry wood; it has its own half-court basketball court as well as video games, pool tables, and everything else you need to play in style. Hard Rock:If you’re a high roller who is also into a little kink, the Provocateur Penthouse Suite comes stocked with S&M gear as well as a film projector in the bedroom. It’s also a high roller bargain if you stay during the week, with $3,500 weeknight rates that jump up to $7,500 on the weekends. Caesars Palace: The Spa Suites at Caesars are typically reserved as free comps for guests but for $2,000/night you can relax in an infinity bath with breathtaking views of Vegas and the Strip.

High Stakes Monks
13 May 2012 | By: Seth Shafer High stakes poker games have become more common around the world as the popularity of the game has increased but a recent high stakes game involving eight monks in South Korea has led to a scandal for the nation’s largest Buddhist sect. Not only were the eight high-ranking monks caught playing poker on video — reportedly with $900,000 changing hands during the 13 hour marathon poker session — but drinking and smoking as well, all of which is contrary to their Buddhist beliefs, with gambling outside of casinos in South Korea illegal as well. The monks were members of the Joyge order, which with ten million members is South Korea’s largest and most prominent Buddhist sect. The scandal has led to six senior monks offering to resign with the head monk of the order issuing the following statement: “We deeply apologize for the behavior of several monks in our order. The monks who have caused public concern are currently being investigated and will be punished according to Buddhist regulations as soon as the truth is verified by the prosecution.” The poker game took place during a retreat at a posh lakeside resort where the monks had gathered for a memorial service for a fellow member. It’s believed that a fellow monk secretly filmed the game, turning the footage over to the head monk. Rumors had swirled for years that high ranking monks of the order would in private smoke, drink, and gamble but the footage seen below is the first time that any real proof has been put forth: More Casino News 12 May 2012 There have been plenty of “can’t lose” systems put forward for winning at roulette over the years but one of the few men to actually pull off the feat Read More 09 May 2012 Most of us wonder from time to time what it’s really like to be a high roller in Vegas, as far as trading in playing $5/hand blackjack at Bally’s for Read More 06 May 2012 Macau is experiencing a mini building boom after a lull in new casinos opening, with the long-delayed Sands Cotai Central casino finally opening its d Read More 03 May 2012 Las Vegas obviously offers plenty for gamblers from around the world to enjoy but there are also a lot of great sights to see in the city away from th Read More 01 May 2012 The colorful O’Sheas casino closed its doors for the final time on May 1, with the parking garage imploded as work gets into full swing on the $500 mi Read More 28 April 2012 Despite several positive factors working in its favor — including unseasonably warm weather and the opening of the new Revel casino — the casinos th Read More

How to Win at Roulette
Roulette is very popular in online casinos. The basics of the game are that a ball is thrown into a spinning roulette wheel. The wheel has red and black alternating slots, and each slot has a number on it. On all roulette tables the 0 or 00 slot is green. The Players generally place bets either on which number or on which colour of slot the ball will come to rest in. It is not a difficult game to learn or to win. In many ways it is a game of chance, but not entirely; there are a couple of guidelines which can be learned and practiced that can help you increase your success and the size of your wins. One option is simply to avoid the types of bets which have overall odds of small wins. The five number bet in American roulette is of this type and covers the chance of the ball landing in 00, 0, 1, 2, or 3. Many people advise avoiding American roulette, due to the additional 00 slot as this slightly lowers your edge over the house. European roulette, on the other hand, only has the one 0 slot and is often recommended as the better variation of the game to play for this reason. Another aspect of playing roulette is whether to choose an inside bet or an outside bet. An inside bet has lower odds of winning, but a bigger payout if you do win; an outside bet has higher odds of winning but a smaller payout. Try opting for even money on an outside bet as one strategy which can help you within a long term winning plan. If this is done on a European roulette wheel then it is generally agreed that this will usually increase your overall chances of winning.

Macau Still Booming
30 March 2012 | By: Seth Shafer Despite facing several headwinds the gambling boom in Macau shows no signs of slowing, with business booming in March and a record for gambling revenues within reach for the former Portugese colony that is now by far the world’s top gambling destination by revenue. Early results for the first half of March showed revenues up 40% over the prior year, which would put March on pace to break the all-time record $3.35 billion that was wagered in Macau in October 2011. As far as market share, casinos operated by Stanley Ho’s SJM Holdings held about 28% of the Macau market, with Las Vegas Sands and Galaxy Macau both at 18%, and Wynn Macau (13%), Melco Crown (12%), and MGM China (11%) rounding out the rest of the pack. Macau has become an increasingly important source of revenues and profits for Las Vegas Sands, Wynn, and MGM, with results there now dwarfing the revenue taking in by their operations in Las Vegas (which traditionally was the primary focus for the Las Vegas-based gambling giants). Gambling revenues continue to grow in Macau despite the efforts of China to clamp down on junket operators that extend credit to high roller gamblers in Macau — primarily baccarat players — as well as a very public spat between Steve Wynn and former business partner Kazuo Okada centering on the possibility of bribes being paid to establish their operations in Macau. Macau’s success story is being emulated in other markets in Asia as well, with Singapore poised to also pass Las Vegas based on total gambling revenues per year — and with just two casinos currently operating in Singapore as opposed to the dozens that call Las Vegas home. Macau’s record growth likely won’t continue as some of the gambling appetite in Asia is sated but all signs point to the region solidly remaining the world’s top gambling destination based on revenue for decades to come, with its proximity to China guaranteeing a torrent of gambling dollars to continue to stream into Macau.

Momentum Grows for Online Gambling in the US
2 April 2012 | By: Seth Shafer Several US states are taking a hard look at legalizing online poker and casino sites for residents, with the primary lure being the possibility of propping up sagging state budgets with millions of dollars in new tax revenues. In 2011 the District of Columbia became the first area to pass legislation that could allow it to offer online casino and poker sites to residents; delays and questions have plagued the initiative, however, with the possibility that the entire endeavor may be scrapped before ever seeing the light of day. That hasn’t stopped legislators in Ney Jersey, California, and Nevada from pursuing very similar legislation, with a recent ruling by the US Department of Justice clarifying the scope of the Wire Act to apply only to sportsbetting — and not to other activites such as online poker or online lotto ticket sales — adding more fuel to the fire. With many US states still struggling with high unemployment and dipping property values, a pitch for online gambling is much more receptive to voters’ ears than in the past. The same greater receptivity to gambling in general has seen states such as Massachusetts vote to add brick-and-mortar casinos for the very first time, while several other states have dramatically expanded their gambling options. As far as the potential money at stake from legalizing online gambling in the US, estimates vary widely depending on which side of the debate you fall on. Industry groups and pro-gambling lobbyists peg the potential tax revenues as high as $10 billion per year for the US gambling market, but studies that individual states have done have produced much smaller figures, with the state of Iowa releasing a study that shows it could collect around $5-$15 million a year while California projects it could make as much as $250 million.

Top 5 Unusual Casino Games to Try
28 March 2012 | By: Seth Shafer Most gambling fans have tried their hand at popular games like blackjack, craps, and roulette but there are also plenty of other unique and interesting casino games that you might give a whirl for a change of pace at both online casinos as well as at brick-and-mortar casinos. Below we’ll look at a few games that you may not have yet given a spin, including some that actually have quite good odds for players and are definitely worth checking out. Pai Gow: Pai Gow is based on poker and uses the same basic hand rankings, with players dealt seven cards and competing against the dealer, who also gets seven cards. the goal is to make two different poker hands, one with five cards and the other with two cards. If both hands of the player beat the dealer, then the player wins whatever they initially bet before the cards were dealt. If both hands lose, the house wins and the player loses their bet. If one wins and one loses, it’s a push and no mmoney changes hand. Pushes are very common at Pai Gow, which makes it popular with some players who are looking to get the most enjoyment out of their gambling dollars — and lots of free drinks from the cocktail waitresses! You can play pai gow online as well as at many casinos in Vegas and other larger gambling destinations. Sic Bo: Sic bo is a dice game that’s much more popular in Asian casinos in Macau and Singapore but can also be found in larger Vegas casinos as well as online. Similar to craps but with three dice rolled instead of two, you’ll be betting on different combinations that are rolled such as “Big” (the total of the three dice between 11-17), “Small” (a total between 4 and 10) and odd or even as well as other specific totals. War: If you played the card game War as a kid, yes, indeed, you can actually now gamble on it at casinos in Las Vegas and around the world. Just place your bet and you’ll battle it out with the delaer to see who is dealt the higher card; top the dealer and you win your bet. Chuck-a-luck: You’ll apparently have to travel all the way to Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut to play this one, but chuck-a-luck is a dice game played with three dice tumbled in a cage. Bettors place wagers on how the dice will land, plunking down bets on numbered squares and winning according to how many times that number is rolled when the dice land. Money Wheel/Big Wheel: If you like to keep your gambling simple, money wheel might be the game for you, as you simply bet on what portion of a big spinning wheel you think the pointer at the top of the wheel will land on after the spin is done.

Sin City to Come to Spain?
27 March 2012 | By: Seth Shafer If Las Vegas gambling mogul Sheldon Adelson has his way Spain might be the next country to see huge Vegas-style resorts and casinos being built, with plans to build a huge $22 billion gambling mecca in Madrid or Barcelona. Both cities are vying for the right to host Adelson’s planned “Eurovegas” project, which would include six casinos and 12 hotels with over 36,000 rooms as well as numerous shops, bars, restaurants, and conference centers. Adelson (who operates casino giant Las Vegas Sands) will decide later in 2012 which city to build in assuming the deal is given the green light by Spanish authorities, which isn’t a guarantee as concerns have been raised about the massive scope of the project as well as concessions Adelson is demanding such as smoking being permitted in the casinos and no building limitations on the size and scope of the planned project. Adelson has had plenty of success breaking ground in new markets, with Las Vegas Sands’ operations in Macau and Singapore now bringing in the bulk of the company’s revenues and profits. Las Vegas Sands passed Caesars last year as the world’s largest gaming corporation, posting profits of $1.3 billion in 2011. Spain is one of the world’s top gambling markets with the majority of its citizens taking part in lotto, sportsbetting, and other types of gambling each year but casinos in Spain remain a relatively smaller and more sedate affair, without the huge, sprawling resort-style casinos and hotels seen in Las Vegas, Macau, and other locations. While the Spanish government has been resistant in the past to approving projects such as the one planned by Adelson the severe economic crisis has led many to believe that this time might be different. Unemployment in Spain remains above 20% and the economy is projected to shrink another 1.7% in 2012. Adding large casinos such as the “Eurovegas” project would not only provide an injection of new construction jobs but also tens of thousands of permanent jobs as well once the complex was constructed, with potentially billions in additional tax revenues collected from the millions of tourists that visit Spain each year from around the world.

Zynga Looks to Ante Up for Online Gambling
20 January 2012 | By: Seth Shafer Social games developer Zynga announced on Friday that it was in talks with potential partners to offer real money online poker and casino games, hoping to create a new revenue stream to soothe anxious investors questioning its long-term growth prospects. Moving into online gamblingwould mark a significant departure from the company’s normal business model, which sees it pull in money by sellign advertisements as well as giving users the chance to spend real money on virtual currency that can only be used in its games. Its Zynga Poker game has 7 million daily users and 30 million or so monthly users, which is light years ahead of PokerStars — the world’s largest online poker site for real money play — which sees a peak of 50,000-60,000 users active on the site on a typical day. The comparison, though, is a bit unfair as Zynga Poker is free to play with only a tiny fraction generating revenue for Zynga while many of PokerStars players are real money players generating significan revenue day after day. Zynga’s annoucement was a dramatic about-face from its position just a few months ago that it had no interest in dabbling with online gambling for real money, and possibly spurred on by its struggling share price since its recent IPO, which is off nearly 15% from its opening price. While the company is marginally profitable some analysts fear that its growth prospects are limited, with a saturation point possibly reached for its popular games such as CityVille, FarmVille, and CastleVille. Competition from competitors is also increasing with Zynga’s stranglehold on the social games market slipping a bit. In October the company announced plans for several new games including Zynga Casino, which is still in development and will include popular casino games such as bingo, blackjack, and roulette. Zynga hasn’t released the names of potential partners, with some analysts also not ruling out that the company may use some of its IPO warchest to buy itself into the online gambling space instead via an acquisition.
